In most scenarios, the procedure for dental crowns requires two appointments. During the first visit, we will prepare the tooth that needs a crown by shaping the tooth, taking an impression of it, and placing a temporary crown over it. Typically, this process will take 30 minutes to an hour. While you are not in the office, your tooth impression will be sent off, and your crown will be created in a dental laboratory. Dental crowns should be completed within two weeks.
Once we complete the dental crown, the patient will return to our office for the second appointment. We will fit the crown over the patient's tooth and cement it into place. The second appointment will only take around 20-30 minutes.
During both appointments, we will give the patient the necessary local anesthetics, so the patient does not feel any discomfort. During the shaping step, we may size down the tooth a bit to ensure the crown will fit over it comfortably and look good next to other teeth. If the tooth is already smaller due to decay or other damage, we may need to build it up a little before placing the crown. Thus, it reaches the same height and size of the other teeth close by. Sometimes, we will need to taper the tooth so it is not too tight and wedge in next to nearby teeth. The shaping will not only ensure the crown looks natural in the mouth, but it will also allow the crown to fit more securely.
Normally, we will take the impressions with a thick putty-like material. In rare cases, we will only need to take measurements. The impression tray will sit in place for a few minutes to ensure that we imprint all of the details. We will make impressions into casts with which the technicians will create the crown or crowns.
When you come in to have us place your permanent dental crowns, we will remove any temporary crowns on the teeth. Before cementing the crowns into place, we will check to make sure they fit correctly over each tooth. we will place dental adhesive on the tooth, and fit the crown over it. It will dry for a few minutes before removing any excess adhesive. Following this process, you will be able to head home with your new dental crowns and improved smile.
